I am very happy to congratulate Shanghai on 2010 World Expo. It will undoubtedly become the largest and most memorable World Expo in history.
Likewise, I would like to congratulate you on the wonderful theme of the Expo: Better City, better life.
The establishment of this theme further proves China's long-term commitment to sustainable development.
In view of my status as vice president of University of Cambridge - you should not be surprised - I regard education as one of the important ways to realize these great aspirations.
This refers to the most generalized education, which includes: public education at school level, Vocational Continuing Education, promotion activities and international cooperation, and university teaching.
In recent years, China has achieved remarkable results in the development of education. Its enrollment in Colleges and universities has soared to 6 times that of 1998.
At the same time, more and more Chinese people have realized the importance of quality education, that is, let students learn to dialectically analyze problems, think creatively, and so on, instead of simply passing examinations.
China has been unmistakably aware that in order to establish and improve a world-class education system, international cooperation and exchanges aimed at education are essential.
This is also an important part of China's education reform in the near future. It will greatly promote China to achieve its goal by 2020 and develop an innovation led economic system.
Education, of course, will become an important theme in the British World Expo arrangement.
I am delighted to learn that the British Pavilion is one of the most anticipated pavilions in World Expo. It will also serve as an educational venue for all alumni who have studied in Cambridge and other universities in the UK.
Back in 1998, the number of Chinese educated in the United Kingdom was less than 3000. Now, this figure is estimated to reach 85000 people, nearly the number of Chinese students studying in the United States.
You know, the size and population of Britain are much smaller than that of the United States.
I am particularly proud of the fact that during the period, 700 Chinese citizens chose to study in Cambridge, and eventually they were able to enter Cambridge.
Chinese students can also get all kinds of qualification certificates set up in China by the British: the University of Cambridge examinations committee holds 900 thousand people a year's examination in China, most of which are English language tests, such as IELTS.
Not only that, more than 10 thousand of Chinese students are studying higher education courses offered by British universities in China, many of them will come to Britain to complete their studies later.
I hope to see more Chinese students benefit from the activities arranged by Britain in this World Expo. The experience of British higher education will also provide them with a broader view.
I am pleased to see that there are educational activities in the UK sponsored activities, educational exhibitions and contacts between schools.
At the same time, it will provide valuable information about educational institutions, courses and qualifications in the UK.
This year, through this World Expo, the whole world will witness the great efforts made by Shanghai to improve the living standard of the citizens.
These efforts include the development of the education system.
I hope that the pleasant cooperation between China and other universities in University of Cambridge and other universities in the UK, both in terms of quantity and quality, will be able to build a higher level in the years ahead and contribute to the "better life" of the two peoples.
