Worried about the rising price of cotton yarn, India Garment Export Promotion Committee sent a letter to textile minister Anand Sharma, asking for permission to import cotton yarn without duty.

Sakthivel, President of the garment export promotion council (AEPC), said cotton prices rose nearly 3-5% in the past two months, and yarn prices rose more than 15% at the same time.

Under such circumstances, we do not advocate any export ceiling, but at the same time, we ask for a total cancellation of 10% of the tariff, allowing cotton yarn to be imported tax-free.

He also recommends that imported cotton yarn be allowed to be produced.

The association said domestic demand could increase to 3 billion 200 million kilograms, currently 2 billion 600 million kilograms.

India expects to produce 3 billion 500 million kilograms of cotton yarn and export more than 1 billion kilograms in the 2011-12 sales year (October -9 month).
