    Golden Time For Graduates

    2008/10/17 11:40:00 41849

The 2008 year report on employment of Chinese university graduates released by education data consulting firm Michael cook revealed that the best time for graduates to apply for jobs is between one and six months before graduation.

At the same time, the survey found that the proportion of graduates who had already completed their work during the 2007 session (official data was 70%) was significantly lower than the employment rate of 87.5% after six months.

The report is based on the analysis of the relationship between the starting time of job search and the success of the final job seekers.

Statistics on job hunting after graduating from college students for half a year (or even a year) are the usual practice of employment statistics for college students abroad.

The above two results are very meaningful.

For students, this is a multiple choice question: are you ahead of time, increase the success rate of job search before graduation, or extend your job search time to half a year or a year after graduation?

Many students may not hesitate to choose the former, because this is consistent with the traditional concept of graduation, and it can also avoid the embarrassment of continuing to chew the job after graduation. At the same time, it will require schools to create more ample job hunting space for them, reduce the rush for careers and classes, do not arrange too many courses in the year of graduation, do not mention excessive graduation design requirements, and let them go to work earlier.

In fact, even now, in October, graduates who will graduate next year have mostly started to choose careers.

For students such a request, the current school is obviously very willing to accept.

Because in accordance with the requirements of higher management departments, the implementation of work for each school graduate (the so-called current employment rate) is an important index to measure the quality of school running and the employment of students, and even to some professional life and death.

Schools are also worried about how to improve the current employment rate.

However, the choice of students and the choice of schools only see one side of the employment rate, but do not see the other side of what kind of education requirements should be achieved as a student.

So that students can find jobs in advance, so that in the year when they graduated from University, fewer courses were arranged, and very low course requirements (including class discipline and examination requirements) were put into the "year of employment". Can students receive education fully in line with the requirements?

If this does not affect the quality of education, why not change the undergraduate course into three years and become a vocational college for two years, so that students can save a year's tuition fees and have a year to find jobs?

As far as I know, many colleges and universities, whether they are 985, 211 or general undergraduate, try to "spare" more time for students to get jobs, almost all of them are general education courses, which is an indispensable component of university education.

From the above survey, I attach more importance to another survey result, that is, after six months of graduation, the employment rate has been greatly improved.

    This means two points:

         其一,大學生完全沒有必要焦慮于在畢業前無法找到工作。畢業半年到一年中,隨著大學生認識社會的加深,并不斷調整就業期望,找到工作并不是特別困難的事,相對于接受殘缺的四年大學教育而提早找到工作來說,接受完整的大學教育而另花半年時間找工作,也許對未來的長遠發展更有用——目前高校提供的教育是否有價值是另一回事;

         其二,教育管理部門完全沒必要緊盯大學的當期就業率。這個當期就業率與半年后的就業率相差太大,而半年時間,對教育管理部門、對學校來說,就那么緊迫嗎?如果學校能努力提高辦學質量,也許畢業半年之后的就業率會更高,畢業生的發展后勁會更足。

Relatively speaking, the anxiety of education departments and schools has a great impact on students. If university students are willing to accept a complete university education and postpone the job hunting time, the school is still in the anxiety of the current employment rate, and it will be difficult for students to get a better choice if they want to drive their students out of job search and ignore the complete education.

Moreover, it will produce a joint reaction in the employing units, and advance the recruitment time ahead and again.

Looking for employment for half a year or a year after graduation, this is not only conducive to running schools according to their own educational requirements, but also getting rid of the influence of employment orientation on utilitarian and technical skills in education and teaching activities, so as to improve the quality of personnel training, and at the same time, help students get rid of impetuous psychology. A survey shows that quite a number of college students have a strong sense of employment pressure from the beginning of their freshmen, while some college students begin to choose careers from the second semester of junior high school.

Therefore, it is suggested that the education and management departments should abolish the employment rate in the current period, and take the employment statistics of the six months and one year after graduation by the entrusted intermediary organizations to evaluate the employment situation of the school graduates.

This can more truly reflect the employment situation of university graduates, and avoid the actions taken by colleges and universities to raise students' graduation certificates and false figures in order to raise the current employment rate, and also provide a good environment for university education, so as to avoid serious shrinkage of university education.
