Sweden: Employment And Pay Gap Between Men And Women Is The Smallest In The World

    2007/12/23 0:00:00 6

Recently, the world economic forum released the latest list of gender equality in the world. Sweden is the top priority.

The list is based mainly on four aspects: male and female salaries, educational opportunities, political representation and health differences, including average life expectancy.

The world economic forum's assessment of Sweden is that the gap between employment and pay for men and women is getting smaller and smaller.

Shortly before the announcement of the list, the Swedish media exposed a news that Boggs Te Lui M, the inspector of gender equality, stepped down from office and was replaced by a woman named Bogost Lui M.

After taking office, Ms. Bo found that although her name was only one letter from her predecessor, her predecessor's monthly salary was 74000 Swedish kronor. She could only get 62000 kronor and 12000 Swedish kronor (about 14000 yuan).

It is unbearable for a bureaucrat to supervise legal enforcement of equality between men and women.

The new ombudsman complained to the media that even officials who are equal in pay for equal work for men and women can not get equal pay for equal work. How can I supervise the enforcement of relevant laws?

The first and the last, a man and a woman, the wage gap between the two inspectors is 17%.

The gap seems to be hard for the Swedes to accept, but according to the world economic forum, it is the smallest gap in the world.

At present, the average level of Swedish women's income is about 82% of the average of Swedish men.

Even in other European Union countries, such a small gap is still rare.

France, Italy, Spain and other countries only have 50%~70%.

As for other aspects, it is even more difficult to compare with Sweden.

For example, in the Swedish Parliament, the number of female parliamentarians accounted for more than 40% of the total number of parliamentarians, while in France, Italy and other countries, only 10%.

Swedish women have gone through some twists and turns, especially women in politics.

Swedish women won the right to vote in 1921, but not until the 90s of last century were there many female members elected to Parliament.

In the early 1990s, some women writers, female journalists and female scholars joined forces to appeal to all parties to attach importance to women and increase the number of candidates for women. Otherwise, they would pull out their female compatriots from various parties and set up a women's party.

Polls before the election in 1994 showed that if these women really formed a political party, they would get 35% of the vote.

No one dared to belittle such a powerful social force. The Social Democratic Party immediately revised its campaign policy and put forward the new slogan of "giving 1/2 opportunities to women".

This sounds a bit like the Chinese often say that women can hold up half the sky. Specifically, every grass-roots party organization must elect a female candidate for every male candidate.

The electoral policy of the Social Democratic Party has effectively increased the votes.

During the year's election, the Social Democratic Party won and the number of women in Parliament rose sharply.

Almost half of the 21 ministers of the Swedish government are women.

I remember a new cultural minister named Wahlstrom, who was the mother of two children and lived in a small town 300 kilometers away from Stockholm.

In order to ensure that she was able to be "both public and private", the Swedish government initiated the "remote control office".

Every morning, if the woman secretary turns on the TV, he can contact the officials of the Ministry of culture in Stockholm through video and arrange her work. She does not have to go to the capital to work everyday.

"This is not to quit work, but to work in different ways," the minister told the media.

For children, I can often stay with them. It is very important for me to stay away from home at night.

My two sons are most concerned about whether they can send them to bed every night.

Thanks to information technology, it is possible for me to balance political life and family life.

The equality between men and women seems to be mainly respect for women, or what some people call "respect for women's rights". But in Sweden's view, it has surpassed women's rights. Equality between men and women is actually benefiting not only society but also men.

The most interesting way of doing this is to let father take the "maternity leave".

In 1974, Sweden passed the parental allowance system.

With children, parents can get 80% of their monthly salary on maternity leave, but this allowance can be shared by parents in either way, either by a child's mother on a paid vacation or by a father taking a paid vacation.

So, there is a father who says "maternity leave".

This law has been implemented for a period of time, and it is found that the effect is not obvious. It is still that the mother is much less than the father. The reason is that, usually, the father's salary is higher, so it is more appropriate for a mother to take a vacation.

So, in 1995, the rule was changed to a month for mom to rest for a month.

In 2002, it extended to two months.

So when you see a man in the streets of Sweden, you can't think that he has nothing to do because of laid-off work. People are enjoying his father's "maternity leave".
