Surprisingly, Microplastic Fiber Particles Were Found In Living Human Lung Tissue
Every year, humans consume an average of about 74000 plastic particles with unknown health effects. In March, scientists announced that they had discovered that microplastics can enter our blood circulation.
It turns out that they also circulate at low levels deep in our lungs.
The most reliable study of its kind found 39 microplastic particles (each particle size of at least 3 microns) in 11 of 13 lung tissue samples from living people.
Previous studies on cadavers and lung cancer samples have found tiny fibers and plastic sheets in lung tissue, but no one has analyzed the composition of the polymer.
The most common types of microplastics detected in the latest study included polyethylene in plastic bags and packaging, resins in paints, roads and tires, and nylon in clothing.
Although these microplastics are only found in small quantities, they are present throughout the lung, and the deeper the lung tissue is, the more often it is contaminated. ?
Deep in the lungs, plastic particles are surprisingly large.
"It's surprising because the airway in the lower part of the lung is smaller, and we expect particles of these sizes to be filtered or captured before they get deep into the lungs," explains Laura sadofsky, a respiratory specialist at the helyork medical center.
For decades, it has been thought that only the physical diameter is less than 3 μ Only m particles can enter the alveolar area. Today, in the scientific literature, it is said that the alveolar duct is about 540 microns in diameter and 1410 microns in length.
But current research has found that particles can be as long as 2475 microns and as wide as 88 microns. They point out that these particles are "too big to exist, but they do exist.".
The results show that inhalation is a common way for human beings to contact with microplastics, and the particles we inhale may be larger than the experts assumed.
Beyond that, we know very little. For example, it's not clear what the low levels of microplastics in our lungs actually have on human health.
"These data are important advances in the areas of air pollution, microplastics and human health, and the characterization of the types and levels of microplastics that we have found can now provide realistic conditions for laboratory exposure experiments to determine their impact on human health."
The study was published in the Journal Comprehensive Environmental Science.
