Last Year, China'S Clothing And Furniture Design Patents Accounted For 54% Of The World'S Total.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (hereinafter referred to as WIPO) published the world intellectual property index (World Intellectual Property Indicators) 2018 annual report. The report shows that in 2018, global trademark applications grew for ninth consecutive years, and the number of trademark and industrial design intellectual property applications in the global garment industry also increased rapidly. China has the most brilliant performance in all countries and regions, and patent applications account for about half of the world's total applications.

In 2018, applications for intellectual property rights in the world were as follows:

The number of patent applications grew by 5.2% to 3 million 326 thousand and 300 copies.

The number of trademark application projects (Number of classes specified in trademark applications) grew by 15.5% to 14 million 321 thousand and 800 copies.

The number of applications for industrial design products increased by 5.7% to 1 million 312 thousand and 600 copies over the same period.

Registration of plant varieties increased by 8.9% to 20 thousand and 200 copies.

WIPO data obtained from 92 countries or regional authorities showed that about 65 thousand and 900 geographical indications were protected in 2018.

Francis Gurry, head of WIPO, said Asia's intellectual property applications in patents, trademarks, industrial designs and other categories accounted for about 2/3 of the world's total applications and continued to outpace other regions, which means that Asia has become a global innovation hub. It is worth mentioning that China's patent applications account for 46.4% of the world's total applications.

China, the United States, Japan, Korea and Europe have the largest number of applications for intellectual property rights, accounting for 85.3% of the world's total. Their applications for intellectual property rights are as follows:

The number of patent applications received by the State Intellectual Property Office of China is the largest, reaching a record 1 million 540 thousand, representing an increase of 11.6% over the same period last year, accounting for 46.4% of the world's total, equivalent to the sum of second to eleventh national applications.

The number of applications received by the State Intellectual Property Office declined by 1.6% to 597 thousand and 100, the first decline since 2009.

The number of applications received by Japan's State Intellectual Property Office fell 1.5% to 313 thousand and 600 year-on-year.

The number of applications received by the State Intellectual Property Office of Korea increased 2.5% to 210 thousand year-on-year.

The number of applications accepted by the European Patent Office increased by 4.7% to 174 thousand and 400 year-on-year.

　　 In 2018, Asia remained the most active area of patent applications. Driven by China's economic growth, the total number of patent applications received by Asian countries has increased from 50.8% in 2008 to 66.8% in total. North America accounts for 19% of the world's total, while Europe accounts for 10.9% of the world's total. Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Oceania account for 3.3% of the world's total.

In 2018, the number of valid trademark registrations in the world was about 49 million 300 thousand, an increase of 13.8% over the same period last year. Among them, the number of effective trademarks registered in China is 19 million 600 thousand, and the number of valid trademarks registered in the US ranks second and third in India is 2 million 400 thousand and 1 million 900 thousand respectively.

Industrial Design

In 2018, the number of applications for industrial design was about 1 million, and the number of products increased by 5.7% to 1 million 300 thousand over the same period. Among them, furniture design accounted for 10.5% of the total number of applications, and clothing design and packaging, container design applications ranked second and third, accounting for 8.3% and 7.7% of the total product respectively.

In 2018, the total registered design of effective industrial products increased by 6.55% to 4 million over the same period last year. Among them, the most effective registered countries were China (1 million 600 thousand), followed by South Korea (344 thousand and 600), the United States (336 thousand and 200) and Japan (257 thousand and 200).

The number of applications handled in China increased by 29% to 5760 over the same period.

The number of applications received by the European community increased by 3.9% to 3554 over the same period last year.

The number of applications received in the United States increased 3.3% to 1609 year-on-year.

The number of applications handled in Ukraine increased by 17.1% to 1575 year-on-year.

The number of applications received in Japan dropped 13.6% to 880 year-on-year.

geographical indication

　　 Geographical indications are mainly used for product labels. They are usually products with good quality and excellent reputation. In 2018, 65 thousand and 900 commodity producing areas were recognized worldwide.

Among them, Germany has the largest number of effective geographical indications, 15 thousand and 600, and China has 7247; Hungarian Czech Republic has 6683 and 6285 effective geographical indications respectively.

Among all the geographical indications, the area of "wine and spirits" is the largest, about 51.1%, and the number of agricultural products, food producing areas and handicraft producing areas is second and third, accounting for 29.9% and 2.7% respectively.
