Yao Mu: China's Textile Industry Standard Setter

Yao mu, a famous textile material expert, is a member of the Chinese Academy of engineering. Born in 1930 in Tang gate, Nantong, in 1948, she was admitted to the textile department of private Nantong college. In 1952, she graduated from the Textile Engineering Department of Shaanxi national Northwest Institute of technology and stayed in school. He is currently vice chairman and honorary member of Shaanxi provincial science and Technology Association; Honorary President of Xi'an Polytechnic University; executive director of China Textile Engineering Society; vice president of Fiber Association of China Standardization Association. The textile material science, led by him, is a classic of the discipline.

To see academician Yao Mu is his private residence in the family area of Xi'an Polytechnic University. As the pioneer of the research on clothing comfort in China, his research results are still the theoretical foundation of our special functions such as polar clothing, spacesuit, combat clothing and so on.

Yao Mu is also the undertaker of many countries' special tasks. His resume is closely related to the memories of the Chinese people. During the interview, he and reporters chatted about the unforgettable experience of developing the "SARS" protective clothing. In 2003, "SARS" raged, medical personnel accounted for 1/3 of the infected and dead population. Yao Mu was burning with anxiety: "if doctors and nurses can't live, the treatment of SARS will become an impossible task." At that time, doctors and nurses had to wear tight gas protective clothing. After 4 hours, the sweat was half a kilogram.

What kind of clothing can not only prevent poison but also let steam go through? Yao mu, who is in danger, has joined a core R & D team of 28 people. Based on past research results, through many experiments and calculations, he and his team finally selected the PTFE film, the key material for making protective clothing.

In April 28, 2003, Yao Mu and his team, more than 20 sleepless nights, developed a new type of medical protective clothing. After discussion at the meeting, the national standard for protective clothing was implemented on the same day. "This is something that has never been seen in the world."

In the evening of April 28th, SARS protective clothing was put into mass production. In May 1st, it was delivered to Beijing Xiao Tang Shan Hospital for supply. After 16 years, Yao mu can clearly recall every feedback data: "from May 2nd until the end of that year, 1373 patients were treated in Xiaotangshan hospital, and none of the 1380 health care workers in the hospital was infected by SARS virus."

Looking back with the textile engineering career for the most part, Yao Mu's step ahead should always be in line with the needs of the country. At the beginning of the founding of new China, the textile engineering profession was short of ready-made teaching materials, and he taught himself. In the 60s of last century, he led the team to develop new pigments coated on the sheep's body, making the problem of "Hua Dane" being scrapped due to the existence of asphalt spots. In the 80s of the last century, the state created "foreign exchange", and Yao Mu and his team used many colored shirts to open the door to the high-end market in the US. In the return of Hongkong, he was responsible for the research and design of the new generation uniform, so that the soldiers displayed the heroic posture and military prestige of the troops stationed on the Luohu bridge.

It has won the first prize of national science and technology progress, formulated nearly 20 national standards and military standards for textile materials and textiles, published more than 180 papers, published 8 monograph and translations. In the face of achievements and honours, the "textile encyclopedia" in the eyes of academia and the "China textile materials" recognized by the industry are modest and indifferent. "People live to serve the motherland and the people, and what the motherland and people need, I will do." The hardships of life, the frustrations and frustrations in research and development, have become the stories of Yao Mu's mouth.

Nearly seventy years in the textile industry, Yao Mu has witnessed the rise of China's textile industry. From a big textile country to a strong textile power, Yao Mu believes that the high performance fiber and its composite materials produced by the textile industry are strategic materials urgently needed for the development of the aviation, aerospace and defense industries. It is also a key technology area for the western developed countries to carry out strict confidentiality, control and embargo against China. We must accelerate development.

Yao Mu has always been concerned about the development of Nantong's textile industry. "In the past 40 years, the development of Nantong's textile industry has taken the lead in the whole country, especially home textiles become the trend vane of the industry." Yao Mu revealed that he had recently made a proposal for the promotion of chicken feet cotton in Nantong and other places, and made a proposal to the Nantong Association for science and technology. "We hope that Nantong will continue to innovate in the textile industry, combine textile and more fields, and achieve various improvements in variety, use, quality and so on, so that China can let the world see more Nantong figures."
