    New Materials With Both Color Change And Deformation Properties

    The Shenzhen advanced technology research institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced on the 1 th that a scientific research team of the academy has developed a new material that can be discolourable and deformed according to the needs of the creatures such as chameleons and snakes, and is expected to be applied to the field of robotics. The research results were published in July 31st in the international authoritative journal Journal of materials science.

       According to the research team leader, Du Xuemin, an Associate Research Fellow of the Shenzhen advanced technology research institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, there are many regular nanoscale particles in the skin of chameleon. When the skin is dilatation or contraction, the spacing of nanoparticles will change, thus changing the effect of light reflection and showing the color changes visible to the naked eye.

    According to this feature, researchers have produced a film material similar to chameleon skin nanostructure, which can control the time of exposure to specific solvent vapor and achieve different color changes.

    At the same time, researchers have also simulated the movement of snakes and earthworms to make this new material "move". When the thickness of the solution vapor and material satisfies certain conditions, the material can have two properties of discoloration and deformation.

    Du Xuemin said that the two smart properties of color change and deformation were integrated into one material, which is a breakthrough in this research. In the future, new materials designed by this idea are expected to be applied to special robots to achieve real-time interaction between robots and the environment.
