Cotton Association Announced 2016 Cotton Farmers Intention To Investigate Cotton Planting

The professional cooperatives respectively conducted second surveys on the cotton planting area in 2016 in 12 provinces in the mainland and 3000 rural households in 310 counties (cities and regiments) of Xinjiang autonomous region.

The survey results showed that in 2016, the cotton planting area in China was 43 million 280 thousand mu, down 10.17% from the same period last year, a drop of 3.17 percentage points over the previous period.

Xinjiang cotton area has a 9.35% decrease in cotton planting intention due to the drop in cotton price and the cotton planting policy. The cotton growing areas in the mainland are affected by many factors, such as less acquisition enterprises, higher labor costs, longer cotton planting time and large investment. The cotton planting price is reduced by 11.63%.

Based on the area of the association in 2015, it is estimated that the total area of cotton planting in China will be 43 million 278 thousand and 600 mu in 2016, a decrease of 10.17% over the same period last year.

Cotton planting in Xinjiang cotton area decreased by 9.35%, an increase of 1.75 percentage points over the previous period.

The main reason is: Recently, the data released by the Xinjiang Autonomous Region government show that the cotton planting area in 2016 will be reduced by 1 million 500 thousand mu on the basis of last year, and maintained at about 23 million mu. The cotton planting will be concentrated in the dominant producing areas. Cotton production will be pformed from simple expansion area to low cost and high efficiency.

Among the surveyed cotton farmers, 15.8% of cotton farmers were prepared to reduce cotton planting area, and only 4.1% of them were prepared to increase. Last year, cotton farmers accounted for 62%, and 18.1% of cotton farmers were still hanging around.

The decline of cotton planting intention in the the Yellow River River Basin increased earlier than before. Since late January, cotton production in the river basin has basically stagnated. Cotton farmers can not sell cotton in their hands, and they lack confidence in planting cotton next year.

In 2016, the cotton planting area was expected to decrease by 13.88% over the same period last year, and the percentage of the cotton growing area increased by 4 percentage points. The two provinces in Henan and Hebei expected to reduce their area by more than 20%.

Among the cotton farmers surveyed by the survey, 41.69% of cotton farmers were prepared to reduce cotton planting area, 9.50% of which were prepared to increase, 42.29% of them were flat last year, and 6.52% were cotton farmers.

The intention to reduce cotton planting in the Yangtze River Basin is smaller than that in the the Yellow River River Basin, but the cotton planting situation is not optimistic. The main reason is that the labor cost of the basin is higher, and cotton planting needs a lot of labor input. Cotton farmers reflect that cotton planting is becoming more and more worthless.

In 2016, cotton planting area was expected to decrease by 9.52% over the same period last year, a 1.6 percentage point increase.

Among them, two provinces in Hubei and Jiangsu are expected to have a larger drop in cotton planting area and more than 14% yuan, mainly because the purchase price of cotton in Hubei is not ideal this year. The cotton market in Jiangsu is not active, and cotton is not bought in some areas. As of the end of January, Jiangsu's sales progress is less than 80%.

Among the surveyed cotton farmers, 25.77% were prepared to reduce cotton planting area, 6.81% of households were prepared to increase, 41.14% of which were flat last year, and 26.28% was still hovering around.
