Incorporation Of Azo Dyes Into Harmful Substances Control In Household Products In Japan

Japan's Ministry of labor and health and welfare (MHLW) proposes to amend the "Regulations on the control of harmful substances in household products" and the regulations on the implementation of the household product pest control act.

According to the proposal, Japan will increase the restrictions on azo dyes, and modify the detection methods of formaldehyde, three phenyl tin compounds and three butyltin compounds in household products.

If MHLW's proposal is finally passed, it will have a significant impact on textiles, household products and leather products exported to Japan.

(Azodyes) it can be used for dyeing and printing of many natural and synthetic fibers. Some azo dyes can decompose and produce carcinogenic aromatic amines, causing lesions and inducing cancer.

It can stimulate skin and mucous membrane and can sensitization.

Three phenyl tin compounds and three butyltin compounds are commonly used as fungicides, fungicides and coatings, which are toxic to humans.

Details of the proposed amendments are as follows:

(1) 24 kinds of azo dyes are classified as harmful pollutants and controlled.

It is recommended to detect by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the content of azo dye should not exceed 30 g/g.

Products requiring occasional dye detection are as follows:

Diapers, diapers, underwear, pajamas, gloves, socks, intermediate clothing, jackets, hats, bedding, floor coverings, tablecloths, collar ornament, handkerchiefs, towels, bathroom mats and related products;

Leather and fur products: underwear, gloves, intermediate clothing, coats, hats and floor coverings.

(2) revising the detection method of formaldehyde content in household products.

After revision, some acetic acid and ammonium acetate solutions will be used in some test procedures instead of pure water before.

(3) to modify the detection methods of three phenyl tin compounds and three butyltin compounds in household products, it is recommended to use gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instead of the previous test methods.
