    Designer Wu Jigang'S Creative Space

    2014/9/30 10:11:00 24

    Wu Jigang Designer

Where did the clothing series originate?

Of course, it originated from the designer's mind and imagination, but it also originated in a physical space, a chamber which the consumer has hardly seen before: Office / Studio.

In many ways, these private spaces, like fashion shows, can reflect fashion choices and perspectives.

If you still have doubts about this, let's take a look at this series of video behind the scenes: designers from New York and Paris invited New York Times to enter their professional life.

First came Wu Jigang (JasonWu), who founded his own fashion brand in 2006. He became famous for his two inauguration ceremony for Michel Obama (MichelleObama).

Of course, these two dresses were designed in his studio in New York (the following interview was edited and condensed).

Q: how long have you worked here?

A: I've worked in this office for three years.

I always wanted to move to the clothing District, because 90% of my clothes were made here, so I think it is very important to be close to the factory. I am still very close to the factory and I am still in New York.

In my opinion, it really feels like New York.

Someone was carrying cloth at 8 a.m., and there were many lorries and loud whistles.

Q: did you move here because the place was not enough?

A: my last studio has 3000 square feet, this is 10000 square feet, and there is another layer, so the area is about six times the original one.

My previous office was very crude.

The walls were brushed by myself.

I painted charcoal gray and white.

It's a minimalist style. It's not that we want it to be a minimalist style, but that we didn't have money at that time.

And this office allows me to explore and play.

When I first moved here, the walls were red and the carpet was grey.

It seems like a trading company before. There are about ten offices on this floor, so we have to throw everything away.

Q: How did you choose this private corner in this space?

Answer: this corner seems to be the most intimate part of the entire office.

I feel it calling my name.

Q: is it important for you to have a rest place?

    Answer: important.

My daily life is busy, and there are many crazy moments, especially during the fashion week.

But sometimes you need a quiet time to pull up the curtain and have five minutes of uninterrupted time.

Although this has not really happened.

But I always start a new day here, writing mail and making phone calls here.

Q: how do you choose your desk?

A: This is an antique desk.

I like the feeling of classical and wood, and I don't like typical desk.

To a large extent, I am very traditional.

I like old furniture and classical furniture, which represents me well.

    Q: what about these chairs?

Answer: these chairs come from DDC design company.

When I was studying at Parsons college seven or eight years ago, I used to go there. At that time, what I wanted included these black and white chairs.

Now I have them at last.

    Q: what's on the shelf?

    Answer: many books.

    I buy books every week.

I think I am a Book hoarding, but I like the touch of paper very much, like their appearance and taste.

    This kitten represents good luck.

I always liked cats, so my parents gave me this when I was little, and I kept it all the time.

There is also a little clock, because I am always late, so it is a good reminder.

Q: did you draw the clothing series first, or did you design it on the computer?

    Answer: I do everything.

Computers are used for sending and receiving mail only.

Generally speaking, I am a computer user.

I still hand cut and paste, use glue and marker pen.

Hands-on work is still my favorite way.

Q: is that wall made of soft plank?

    Answer: Uh huh.

I need to nail everything to the wall, so you will find that my studio is full of soft boards.

It's like a big refrigerator sticker. I can put everything I know on it.

I collect what I like to watch, it is a little like my little history.

Every season I build the wall according to the clothing series.

Sometimes a person inspires me, sometimes a color, sometimes a concept, sometimes a combination of the above three.

In two weeks, the wall will probably be covered with many pictures.

On the second day of the fashion show, I will uncover them all.

There is a feeling of release.

It is like the reincarnation of life.

Q: after that, will you keep all these research and pictures, or throw them away?

A: I file everything every season.

This again indicates that I am somewhat like a hoarding maniac.

I like to keep things that I have read or give me inspirations, because I think at some point in the future, you will want to look back.

Those moments can not be replaced.

    For example, the sign wall.

Q: the wall of the note?

A: I always liked the feeling of paper and pencil.

I have the habit of writing notes. When someone writes me a note, I will feel very special and not willing to throw it away.

I feel very lucky to meet so many different people. I never expected that they would know who I am, let alone care about me.

So I decided to put these notes on a piece of cork wall and never take it off, because they can not be copied, especially for me.

It becomes a bit like an art work.

I won't take those things down.
