Clothing Brands Like H&M And Zara Agreed To Raise Wages For Kampuchea Workers.

Famous clothing brands such as H&M, Zara and Primark are the main buyers of Kampuchea garments.

Recently, the clothing brands jointly sent a letter to the government of Kampuchea, saying that it would promote the wage level of Kampuchea textile workers and incorporate wage increases into their clothing procurement cost budgets.

And so on, eight large fashion retail brands announced recently that they will raise the minimum wage standard for Kampuchea garment workers.

The move was made after thousands of garment workers in Kampuchea protested their low wages on the streets and decided to double their monthly minimum wage to 110 pounds.

Inditex, Zara, Primark and H&M, the largest clothing buyer of "made in Kampuchea", have jointly sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Kampuchea, who said they would consider the issue of wage increase in the cost accounting of products.

Last Wednesday, a massive protest procession took place in Phnom Penh, Kampuchea. Tens of thousands of garment workers dressed in orange T-shirt marched outside the factory at lunchtime, and garment workers demanded a minimum wage of 62 pounds a month to 110 pounds.

Because the protests were too powerful, the government of Kampuchea had to use force to prevent further developments.

The joint letters of these clothing brands indicate that they are willing to pay higher prices for Kampuchea clothing.

The letter states that the purpose of purchasing garments from Kampuchea is to ensure fair wages and to increase the cost of labor in terms of prices.

The joint letter proves that the big brands recognize the importance of trade unions in protecting workers' rights, fair wages and stabilizing the labour market.

The clothing retail brands have been widely condemned by public opinion. They are considered to be indifferent to garment factory workers, and try to lower the wages of workers in order to maximize their own interests.

Ath Thorn, chairman of the Kampuchea apparel industry union, welcomed the joint letter of these big brand stores and called on them to negotiate directly with workers and take concrete actions to raise the wages of Kampuchea garment workers.

Ath Thorn said that in order to achieve long-term stability in the labor market and allow workers to get decent pay and remuneration, we need to take the biggest beneficiaries of the upstream garment industry chain to take action and take the responsibility to ensure workers' interests.
