Exports to the European Union continued to face some obstacles, and Spain, Portugal and Germany recently raised objections.

In February this year, the General Council of the World Trade Organization (WTO) unanimously cleared the barriers to trade preferences for 75 Pakistan products, including 64 items of textiles and clothing.

Ghulam Rabbani, a member of the Pakistan yarn Merchants Association (PYMA), said that before the WTO approval, Brazil, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Argentina, India, Peru and Vietnam opposes giving such preferential access to the EU market for Pakistan products.

He added that only after solving their problems would these countries abandon their objections and pave the way for the approval of the WTO.

Faced with new problems, such as Spain, Portugal and Germany, three European countries objected to the granting of universal preferential treatment system (GSP) to Pakistan in the fear of European recession.

Mr. Rabbani said these countries blocked the Pakistan GSP for the third time at the recent European Parliament meeting.

He said that because of the objection, the trade preferences scheme will be redrafted. If the redrafted scheme is still out of the question or can not be implemented, it may have a negative impact on Pakistan's application for GSP and its status since January 1, 2014.

Therefore, he appealed to the Ministry of Commerce to establish a consensus to persuade the WTO Trade Council (CTG) to grant unilateral duty free market access to goods in Pakistan.
