India Government Seeks New Ways To Import Cotton

Because of the appreciation of rupee, the textile industry in India is going through a difficult period. The textile industry is a major pillar of India's economy. At the same time, the small fluctuations in the textile industry have also caused the government's unrest.

In 2007, the textile industry almost had no profit. In order to make up for the heavy blow of the textile industry, the government could announce a package of measures to support nearly 50 billion rupees.

At a recent meeting, Mr Elangovan, the India textile minister, said the government will soon decide whether to import cotton from Africa and Uzbekistan.

In addition, the central government and government officials responsible for the textile industry will also encourage discussions in the industry to check the reasons behind the rise in cotton yarn prices.

The industry of hand loom is in a bad situation and has attracted the attention of government officials.

In order to revive the ailing textile industry, the government decided to merge the sales promotion plan with the handloom export arrangement of the tenth five year plan, and to revise and add new contents during the eleventh five year plan.

Mr Elangovan also said that the government is working hard to develop new directions for existing policies. Handlooms enterprises can get key development inputs, such as obtaining sufficient credit, production capital, marketing infrastructure and appropriate technology.
